Winter Skills & Adventures
Learning how to thrive when “Winter is Coming”
At Leaders of the Day, we believe that adventures in the wilderness can happen anytime, not just between May and October. When Winter is coming, we just shift into another very exciting gear. When it comes to unique and Transformative experiences in the winter time, our adventures are unparalleled. Our various program models can be modified to fit your group’s unique needs, interests and learning objectives. There is a huge sense of accomplishment that comes with the completion of one of our programs and certain bragging rights as well!
For instance: have you ever built a “Quinzhee” snow shelter and slept in it on a winter’s night with brilliant stars wheeling in the sky overhead? Ever learned how to light a fire without any matches on a snow-covered landscape? Have you ever baked and enjoyed a hot, fresh, loaf of bread with delicious homemade jam while sitting around a winter fire? If you have then you can count yourself among the few people on the planet that have done so. At Leaders of the Day we specialize in building empowering experiences that both thrill and inspire while building a unique set of skills that few have any knowledge of these days.
Come join our Team of expert facilitators for one of our powerful winter programs and join the ranks of those who don’t just “survive” winter but thrive in winter. We look forward to building your adventure. Check out some of the exciting options below. This is just a small sample of what is possible.

Winter Team Building Adventure
A 2-Day, Experiential Learning Adventure
Our Winter Team Building Adventure is an immersive, cold weather Odyssey that helps young people discover their strengths, their voices and their many possibilities. Amidst the snow and ice, students have the chance to engage in innovative activities and problem solving initiatives geared at excavating group cohesion and personal leadership. Despite its short format, this program always delivers incredible impact.
Our Trust Building progression aims at modeling respectful communication and the cultivation of courage. It provides students with rare opportunities to learn about compassion and empathy as they exercise interpersonal competencies like integrity and accountability and learn remarkable things about themselves in the process.
The skilled and very intentional design of this program invites students to stand on the very threshold of their own perceived limitations and then through expert coaching and facilitation encourages them to step boldly out of their “comfort zones” with incredible results. Steeped in an atmosphere of profound safety and respect, this program is renowned for its ability to bring people together and to galvanize Teams. This program is indescribably fun, lighthearted, poignant, thought provoking and set amongst a back-drop of breath-taking natural beauty.
This two day program takes place at the beautiful Spirit Point Lodge, located on the western fringe of Algonquin Provincial Park. The Lodge is the perfect setting for this adventure which combines all the majesty of winter in northern Ontario, with all the comforts of a warm chalet style Inn. This allows us to “play” outside all day while reserving a warm place to come inside at the end of it all to enjoy delicious meals, dry our gear and to relax with warm drinks and stories by the fire-place in our Lounge.
This program has been designed for High School and University aged students but has also been delivered in a modified format for Educators and adult special interest groups as well.

Winter Skills and Survival Program
One and Two Day Formats are Available
Regardless of our cultural backgrounds, our Ancestors were all experts at the art of winter survival or we simply wouldn’t be here. This program provides rich opportunities for students to be mentored in some skills that are fast becoming forgotten art-forms and to foster a sense of confidence and self-reliance . This is a “crash course” in the essentials of not just surviving but thriving.
Earth-based skills such as: shelter building, knot tying, harvesting wild teas, tool making or traditional fire-lighting (with bow drills or flint and steel) are incredible skill sets to have when our expeditions take us to remote settings and “off the beaten track”, but are also incredibly engaging tools to share with your students. Knowing what to do and how to do it with limited resources is crucial in the event that extreme circumstances ever present themselves. Come be mentored in the arts of innovation and self-reliance with our experienced faculty of Wilderness Educators.
This program is currently available by group contract only.
