Back Country Navigation Level 1
Packing & Preparedness

Dear Participant: You are receiving this because you are enrolled in our upcoming Navigation Training. The program takes place at Laurentian University in Sudbury Ontario. The classroom elements of the program will take place in Rm B-267 in the Athletic Building; our program will begin there promptly at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. A link to a map and driving directions are included for you here on this page.

The teaching hours Saturday will be from 9:00 to 4:00 and on Sunday from 9:00 until approximately 3:00 (depending on how long the final field exercise takes to unfold – this is different for each group from year to year).

While there are certainly a few classroom learning elements associated with this program, it will be largely facilitated outside under the sky. To that end, it is essential that you come prepared for the elements. Please be in touch if you have any questions about the weather conditions for your upcoming program.

It will be essential that you have at least 2 pairs of warm comfortable footwear suitable for travel in the back-country for our various exercises and scenarios. Snow or slush pants are a must and a water-proof breathable jacket. There will likely still be snow on the ground and we get additional snow or rain over the course of the weekend.

Please also ensure that you have a small day pack with you and a water bottle to stay hydrated. Lots of layers of warm (non-cotton) clothing will be important so you can move about the bush and be comfortably warm and dry. Mitts and a toque are essential pieces of kit to have with you for our spring and fall sessions to ensure you can participate comfortably in your many group challenges. Compasses and G.P.S. units will be provided for your use during the course. If you have a compass that you enjoy using (with a sighting mirror) feel free to bring it. Your personal G.P.S. units are also certainly welcome.

You will need to bring your own lunch and snacks as we will only have about 45 minutes for lunch so time to go off campus for food is limited. Please be in touch if you have any other questions.

We look forward to adventuring with you soon,
